What We Know Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack
At least 16 people were killed and in excess of 40 were hurt when assailants fired on a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local authorities have labeled a terrorist attack.
According to the most recent information, officials have confirmed the number of fatalities remains at 16, which includes one of the alleged gunmen. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were transported to medical facilities.
The deceased have not yet been publicly named, but police believe their ages range from 10 and 87 years of age.
Below are the individuals who have been named so far.
Eli Schlanger
London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Reportedly a father of five children, he worked as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.
“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member said.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.
She told the moments before the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting began. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she said.
The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had later moved to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.
In a statement, the Foreign Minister said that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the message read.
One Child
A child who was taken to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was among those killed during the attack, according to reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many remain receiving treatment, with a number in critical condition. Those hurt include two officers who responded to the attack.
A casualty is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Hailed as a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he described the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He said he heard “a large number” of gunshots.
“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
