UN:Me: A Psychological Thriller That Blends Silent Hill and Social Deduction Mechanics

The recent Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled a number of intriguing future games, but one in particular has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure appears to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.

"It's a distinctive game where a young woman harboring multiple human souls within her must escape from a maze of the mind," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Shattered Mind

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of teenage years. Inside her reside four separate souls, all possessing their own anxieties and drives. These entities can take over spontaneously, unleashing their deep-seated terrors upon her without warning.

Judging by revealed gameplay, much of the action unfolds within a eerie hospital, though other scenes depict the protagonist navigating a desolate church.

An Environment of Personal Dread

"What are you afraid of? What causes you uncomfortable?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. People in power. Things that seem trivial to other people can trigger something primal inside us. This game delves into that concept — fears that are unique to every individual."

The central gameplay loop involves managing the persona that emerges at a particular moment. However, these souls will change against your will as you play. While exploring, every persona's fears become exaggerated and attack the protagonist in succession. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player encounters.

Eerie Visuals and a Deadly Choice

At first glance, UN:Me shares noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The setting is populated by orderlies who all share the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Patients in the waiting room have large blooms growing from their necks should be. Floral motifs are an ever-present theme, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me presents a unique mechanic. Players must determine which of the four entities inhabiting the heroine is the "real" one. "Each of the souls asserts that the physical form belongs to them," explains a creator. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is real."

After a player have deduced a persona is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. However, since every entity can deceive or hide the truth, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.

"Maybe you've already destroyed the true [soul] with your own hands," a voice states. "The last one standing might be a fraud. Either way, your decisions are irreversible."

UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed launch window, but it is available to wishlist on platforms.
