The Renowned Filmmaker Pays Moving Homage to Diane Keaton
In the wake of the demise of the celebrated actress at 79 years old, the acclaimed director has shared a lengthy tribute remembering her career and their enduring bond.

In a newly released article, Allen, eighty-nine, detailed their shared experiences from their first encounter in 1969 amid rehearsals for his play Play It Again, Sam, through their multi-year relationship and the numerous movies they collaborated on.
“As time went on, I directed pictures for an audience of one, Keaton herself,” he wrote. “I avoided reading a press commentary of my work and was concerned exclusively with what Keaton had to say about it.”
He further noted that she was “unique among people the earth has experienced or is improbable to ever see again,” and that “her face and laugh brightened any room she walked into.”
Sudden Death and Enduring Recollections
The actress died after becoming unwell at her residence in Los Angeles. The actor had been less visible for some months, and a confidant revealed that although no illness had been made public, her condition worsened swiftly, with several of her intimate companions in the dark that she was unwell.
Her passing nonetheless appeared to be a shock even to her closest circle.
“Not long ago, the world was a place that included Diane Keaton,” notes Allen. “Now it’s a world that is without her. Therefore, it’s a gloomier world. Nevertheless, there are her works. And her great laugh still resonates in my head.”
Staunch Support Amid Challenges
The actress continued to be a loyal defender of Allen after the resurfacing of a 1992 abuse allegation made against him by his adopted daughter during a custody battle.
The allegation was carefully probed and then dismissed by two official bodies, and no legal actions were filed.
“Woody Allen is my close companion and I continue to believe him,” Keaton commented of the accusation when it picked up renewed momentum as part of the activist wave. “It may be worthwhile to examine the news feature from 1992 and see what you think.”
Lasting Inspiration
In his recent autobiography, Allen described Keaton as his “north star”; the figure whose view counts the most.
Speaking in the previous year, Keaton said: “He was so remarkable. It consistently felt really unique to be with Woody. He was fantastic. He was everything, and he remains [so] to me. He provided me with endless opportunities. He really did. Woody created a free atmosphere. That helped me enormously.”
Private Memories
Allen’s essay contains recollections of their time together beyond the set, including a notable Thanksgiving playing poker with her family, and remarks of their connection: “We had a few great private moments together and eventually we both went our separate ways, and what led to our split only higher powers and psychology might be able to determine.”
In the recent past, the director overcame his awards season allergy to honor Keaton with the AFI life achievement award, declaring: “The moment I met her, she was a great, great motivation to me. A large part of what I’ve done in my life I owe, for sure, to her. Perceiving life through her eyes. She undoubtedly is remarkable. This is a person who is great at everything she does.”
