The ice cream brand's Founding Partner Alleges Parent Company Prevented Pro-Palestinian Frozen Dessert Flavor
The co-founders behind the famous frozen dessert company Ben and Jerry's has claimed how corporate owner the multinational conglomerate stopped the introduction of a new Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.
The entrepreneur, who co-founded the company alongside Jerry Greenfield, revealed that he will personally create this new flavor within a personal collection highlighting causes Ben & Jerry's was prevented from addressing publicly.
Ongoing Conflict Between Founders and Parent Company
The recent development intensifies the continuing tension between the internationally recognized ice cream maker with Unilever, the British consumer goods giant which has owned Ben & Jerry's since 2000.
Both founders have claimed how Unilever along with their ice cream division the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked their company against "maintaining its activist principles".
The Fruit Sorbet as an Emblem for Support
Mr. Cohen announced through social media that he is creating an innovative watermelon-based sorbet, requesting public suggestions regarding naming options plus potential ingredients.
“I'm doing what they were prevented from doing,” Mr. Cohen commented from a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-flavored frozen dessert that advocates for lasting ceasefire in Palestine while demanding repairing the damage that occurred in the region.”
This particular fruit has emerged as an emblem for solidarity with the Palestinian people because of its coloration, which match those of the Palestinian flag – red, green, black and white.
Previous Social Engagement plus Recent Developments
In 2021, the ice cream company ceased sales of their merchandise in areas occupied by Israel, leading to Unilever selling the Israeli operation to a local licensee, thereby permitting ongoing distribution within disputed territories.
The new dessert series is being developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious ice cream brand which originally established several years back for endorsing former US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Return".
Management Shifts and Upcoming Plans
The founder indicated how he will create additional frozen dessert varieties focusing on concerns which the company was silenced from addressing publicly by corporate restrictions.
The announcement comes after partner Mr. Greenfield stepped down his position at Ben & Jerry's recently, after decades with the organization, mentioning worries that the company's autonomy was undermined after corporate moves to restrict their advocacy work.
At that time, Ben Cohen commented how "Jerry has a really big heart and the ongoing dispute with our parent company was deeply distressing him."
“My conscience leads me to continue to work within the organization to fight for corporate autonomy so that it can actualise the social mission, the principles which it was founded on while upholding for decades," he told media outlets.
