In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The September revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the nation's older political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Broader Political Discussions Taking Place

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
