Throughout a large portion of the concluding season of *Stranger Things*, the young Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are held captive within a psychic prison built from the memories of Henry Creel. Their mission for freedom in episode 6 has them experience a defining event from Henry's early years—a moment that may just hold the secret to his downfall for good.

A Journey Into the Mine Shaft

Upon meeting Max in the psychic realm known as Camazotz, Max reveals she is hiding out in a chamber that Henry avoids at all costs. By leaving the lens cap on a telescope pilfered from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the danger lies not within the cave. When she lines up her view through the cap, she and Max plummet into a subterranean passage.

They watch a child version of Henry come across an injured and paranoid man. As the boy offers aid, the man reacts violently, striking Henry in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly questions through tears. The answer is affirmative, but the trauma involved more than a fight for life.

Like many elements in volume 2, the truth about the mine shaft incident was first explored the theatrical production the prequel play.

The Philadelphia Experiment and Secret Science

The play reveals the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which reportedly teleported a U.S. Navy ship into a plane later called the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the only one to return was the ship's commander, who returned in a vegetative state with an different blood composition.

That survivor's offspring, a young Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this experiment in Nevada. One of his scientists pilfered lab samples to give to the Soviets, who were desperate to launch their version of the tests. The man in the tunnel was that very thief.

So, What's in the Case?

Given what is understood of Brenner's work, the case most likely held some of the unique blood type. At that moment, Henry is bleeding from his hand. He likely becomes contaminated upon contact with the blood, which triggered the awakening of his powers—traits he would later pass on to the children Brenner would experiment on.

Alternatively, the container could have held dark matter that later made its way to the Hawkins lab, where it helps stabilize the parallel world. The prequel shows that Henry was transported in the Abyss, reappearing 12 hours later as a different person. From then on, he battles the control of a malevolent force, reminiscent of how the character Will was possessed by the shadow monster in an earlier season.

A Weaponized Emotion

Henry's enduring terror associated with the mine shows how deeply scarring the encounter was for him. While he orchestrates the Hive Mind and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy lingers. Fear is his tool, and the show is setting up a showdown between him and Will, who has deliberately faced his own deepest fears to fortify himself.

Will's growth has taken a weapon from Vecna. More importantly, Will now knows what the monster's own weakness, which could provide a decisive edge in the ultimate battle that awaits.
