TGA's Future Class Initiative Seems to Be Discontinued
Apart from honoring video games across various award categories, TGA in the past promoted a Future Class program. Those selected within the Future Class cohort were designed to represent the “optimistic, daring, and welcoming future” of gaming, akin to how certain annual lists highlight key figures. But, the Future Class designation is going away, as confirmed by event organizers.
Beyond Simply Recognition: The Purpose of Future Class
This initiative was not just a nod to prominent individuals in the video game industry. It functioned as a nexus for professional connections and career development. Although some alumni shared appreciation for being part of Future Class, some believed that the program fell short for those involved. Criticism targeted multiple areas of the program, from the insufficient support to attend the event to providing no compensation for guiding new inductees.
Past Controversy and Program Suspension
The program was put on hold in 2024, when The Game Awards omitted the recognition in its programming. This absence came after a previous year controversy where a number of those in the program endorsed a statement calling on the show to use its platform to express solidarity with a humanitarian situation.
"You gave us the role of representatives of a better future — accordingly, our obligation to you and all the players around the world compels us to speak out," the statement read.
The letter additionally claimed that the gaming industry often dehumanized Black and brown people, and called on professionals in the space to improve.
Formal Announcement and Website Updates
Though this is the second year that The Game Awards has not nominated a Future Class cohort, event organizers had not officially announced its termination before. The omission has been observed, partly, due to the apparent deletion of any trace of the program on the official Game Awards website. The show creator and producer was not available for comment to a request for a statement.
The Game Awards 2025 are set for Dec. 11.
