The country's authorities launched an inquiry when the US Food and Drug Administration detected Caesium-137, a nuclear isotope, in a consignment of chilled coated shrimp exported by a local firm.

Officials issued an advisory instructing distributors and retailers to dispose of the product and not sell it, even though the detected amount was far below the agency's intervention limit. They noted that the quantity of Caesium-137 it had found would not present an immediate risk to consumers.

Widespread Pollution and Medical Checks

The environment minister stated that people residing in strongly polluted zones would be moved until the location was cleaned, adding that the well-being of the residents was the “top priority”.
