Offspring of Ex- South African Leader Jacob G Zuma Denies Terrorism Allegations as Legal Proceedings Commences
The offspring of ex- South African President Jacob Zuma has pleaded not guilty to terror-linked accusations at the start of her court case in the coastal city of Durban.
Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, 43 years old, is being tried over comments she published on social media in the past during violent unrest in South Africa that followed the apprehension of her parent.
A seven-day period of disorder in multiple regions of the country in July 2021, including looting and intentional burning, caused at least 300 killed and resulted in damage worth an approximate $2.8bn (£2.2 billion).
The defendant has been charged of encouraging this unrest and is charged with allegations of encouragement to commit terror acts and civil unrest.
Background of the Legal Matter
The protests were focused in the areas of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal and followed the former president's apprehension for disobeying a legal directive to testify at an investigation into accusations of impropriety while he was serving as president.
She has repeatedly rejected the accusations against her, with her attorney previously labelling the government's case as weak.
She has also repeatedly stated the accusations against her were an bid to address political disputes with her parent after he established his own political party and campaigned against the ruling party.
Support and Legal Defense
This was reinforced by the Jacob Zuma foundation, which claimed the legal matter was an "abuse of power" and a "organized effort" of "political and kinship targeting" against the former president and his kin.
A small number of supporters from her party, uMkhonto weSizwe, turned up outside the judicial building, while her parent and other group representatives were present at the proceedings inside.
The defense has maintained that the testimony presented by the state is inadequate and fails to provide concrete evidence for a conviction.
Central Elements of the Trial

- The defendant is charged with multiple counts of encouragement to unrest

The legal proceedings continues as the prosecution and defense present their arguments before the judge in what is anticipated to be a highly monitored legal battle with significant politically charged consequences for South Africa.
