Manchester City 3-0 Man United: Hemp scores in City comfortable victory.
Similar to bad weather tore through the north-west the previous evening, City overwhelmed the visitors aside at the Etihad Stadium. It was a convincing three goal victory for their manager's side due to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Shaw and Hemp. It was a display that truly announced their championship potential as they reinforced their place at the top of the table.
Successive Setbacks for United
This scoreline signalled successive WSL setbacks for Marc Skinner’s side for the first time since May 2024, putting them seven points off the top team with their championship aspirations severely dented.
United’s capability to balance league and continental soccer with a thin roster has been a widely debated topic since they earned a place in the Champions League. Considering the calendar, it always seemed this was the week that would fully examine this capability. Regrettably for the visitors, they seemed tired throughout, the landmark win against the French side clearly having left its mark.
Team Changes
Skinner had sought to make changes with a several alterations. Toone, Terland, Janssen and Leah Galton all provided energy, although the dropping of the high-performing Malard to the bench caused surprise.
Manchester City, in comparison, have fewer workload issues. Jeglertz made one adjustment from their most recent win over Everton with Hemp making her return to the lineup since returning from a fitness issue.
Dominant First Half
The pressure started to build for Skinner and his squad from the opening minute. This was a show of the power from City whose potent attack controlled and tore United open with a excellent first half display that saw them put three past the keeper in under half an hour.
This placed City in a commanding position and had Manchester United disorganized. Before this match, United had conceded just few in this league campaign but they disintegrated in the face of Manchester City's creative prowess.
Initial Opportunities
The early indicators came early when Miedema used her strength to bundle Julia Zigiotti off the ball, only to drag her shot off target. Lauren Hemp was at the core of everything from the start, taking advantage of the space left by Jayde Riviere down the visitors' right flank. Her passes were creating danger and led to an attempt for Hasegawa that Sandberg cleared off the line.
United had a number of attacks ahead, their straightforward approach giving them choices in the flanks but they could not test Ayaka Yamashita. Manchester City, in the meantime, dominated possession, taunting their opposition and trying to lure them of their structure.
Goals Galore
They converted their dominance with almost the first period played when Aoba Fujino won the hosts a corner. A delivery to the far post was directed across goal by Bunny Shaw for Knaak to score. It was Manchester City's seventh goal from a cross of the season.
They added to their lead with an additional two goals just before the break. When Jade Rose was permitted to maraud through the center from central defence, the field opened up for the hosts. The key Casparij collected the pass on the wing before providing a accurate low cross for Bunny Shaw to tap home. Four minutes later, they had a third goal after a rapid turnover in the ball saw Hemp allowed the opportunity to fire a shot home from outside the box.
Final Period
The clearest substitution came from the United manager at the break as Melvine Malard was introduced for Terland but by this time it was futile to shift the momentum of the game. Ex- Manchester City player Park came nearest, hitting the woodwork, but the visitors were lacking in ideas and failed to register a single shot on target.
The hosts, on the other hand, could have increased their lead when a delightful Vivianne Miedema long ball sent Shaw away only for her to fluff her lines but it mattered little to the hosts. Having failed to defeat any side who placed above them in the prior term, Jeglertz’s side now have successes against the Gunners and Manchester United to put them in a favorable situation after the opening fixtures.
