International Bodies and the UK Denounce a ‘Gross Injustice’ of Pro-Democracy Activist Jimmy Lai’s 20-Year Jail Sentence.
The court decision of political dissident and British citizen Jimmy Lai to two decades behind bars in Hong Kong has drawn widespread criticism. Advocacy bodies and multiple governments have called the national security convictions driven by politics.
Global Condemnation and Calls for Release
Britain's top diplomat Yvette Cooper stated that the lengthy imprisonment constitutes a de facto life term for the elderly man. She labeled the legal case as having political underpinnings via a statute designed to silence Beijing's detractors. She urged Hong Kong's authorities to cease his persecution and free him to his family.
“This outcome demonstrates how the ambiguous and wide-ranging clauses of Hong Kong’s legal framework can be interpreted in breach of global human rights commitments,” remarked the UN rights chief Volker Türk.
An EU spokesperson, Anitta Hipper, stated the EU “condemns” the outcome of Lai’s prosecution and pushed for his prompt and absolute freedom.
Background of the Case
Jimmy Lai, the force that established the now-shuttered Apple Daily tabloid, was arrested in 2020 the introduction of a controversial national security law in Hong Kong. The law was introduced by Chinese authorities after months of pro-democracy protests backed by Lai's media outlet.
He was ultimately convicted on allegations encompassing plotting to create inflammatory publications and colluding with overseas entities. The collusion allegations were brought under the disputed legislation.
A Son’s Anguish
Lai’s son, Sebastien, shared that his father is afraid of passing away in isolation without seeing his family again. His international counsel has called him the “planet's most prominent prisoner of conscience” in custody today.
Sebastien Lai commented that while the verdict was anticipated, its announcement felt worse than imagined, yet it provided some “relief” that the legal proceedings had concluded.
Diplomatic Fallout
The verdict has cast a shadow over the bilateral relationship. British leader Keir Starmer claimed to have mentioned Lai’s case during a meeting with President Xi Jinping earlier this year. Nevertheless, the extent of progress in securing his freedom is uncertain.
Sebastien Lai questioned the value of enhanced diplomatic ties while his father remains imprisoned, saying it felt “a bit tone deaf.”
Government Reactions
In contrast, the officials from China welcomed the court's decision. Hong Kong’s Chief Executive John Lee said the sentence manifested that “the rule of law is upheld.”
An official representing China’s foreign ministry, Lin Jian, labeled Lai the “primary instigator” behind previous protests and stated the trial had been “proper and within the law.” He called on foreign countries to avoid meddling in the nation's domestic matters.
A Representative Verdict
Media freedom advocates called Lai as a figure representing diminishing media freedom in Hong Kong. Reporters Without Borders' director general remarked it was a “dark day for those who cherish a free press.”
Boasting a close to 100% conviction rate for national security offences, Lai’s lengthy term is seen as the strictest yet imposed under the disputed law.
