A renowned South African media personality and entertainer has been fatally gunned down in the metropolis of Johannesburg, sending shockwaves across a nation battling rampant crime.

Warrick Stock, widely recognized as DJ Warras, was gunned down in the downtown area on a Tuesday afternoon.

Police said the forty-year-old entertainer was accosted by three suspects, with one began shooting at him before fleeing on foot.

The motive of the incident remains unclear and no one has been arrested have been made, police said.

The Fatal Incident

Authorities said that Stock was targeted as he was leaving a location near the city center landmark.

He had spent several hours at the site overseeing the implementation of security systems, which had been controversially occupied by squatters, as per local media.

"Authorities believe the man was confronted by three unidentified men after parking his vehicle, and they opened fire at him before escaping on foot," a police statement stated.

Security camera video reportedly captured a man with dreadlocks and wearing what resembled a security uniform firing shots on Stock before running away.

The DJ attempted to flee after he was shot but collapsed on the opposite side of the road.

Officials noted that Stock had an gun that was not fired and no items were stolen during the attack.

Crucial forensic evidence, like cartridges, were recovered from the scene.

Call for Public Assistance

Officials are asking members of the public who may have witnessed the attack to come forward.

"Evidence suggests they covered significant ground after the attack, and investigators have been attempting to locate them to establish their location," stated a police chief.

Outpouring of Grief

His family member, Nicole Stock, said the family was struggling to come to terms with the loss.

"I am in shock. I am shattered," she stated.
"Everyone understood he was a voice for many people. He was a fearless commentator about topics not many people were prepared to speak about. This is a tremendous loss."

She appealed to the community to refrain from sharing disturbing footage from the incident, noting this was an incredibly difficult time, especially for Stock's young family.

A Multifaceted Career

Stock was the presenter of Ngicel' iVisa, a reality show that was broadcast on a popular local digital satellite entertainment channel.

In addition to his media career, Stock was active in various business ventures, including security provision, offering VIP protection services and securing major functions across South Africa.

He was also understood to participate in property management and was involved in property reclaimations.

His murder has shocked the country and led to an outpouring of tributes from his audience, the authorities and political parties.

A government minister commented he was outraged and heartbroken by Stock's untimely death.

"He expressed his views without fear or favour. He even challenged me and my policies as a public official. He was a shining model of who we must aspire to be," the minister added.

A public representative commented the "brazen murder of DJ Warras in broad daylight is a shock for all South Africans".

A media executive said that "Stock was more than just a TV personality. He was a talented storyteller, a dedicated enthusiast of music and a warm soul who brought excitement and dynamism to every moment on screen. His artistic passion left an lasting impression."

In a communication, the broadcaster he worked for declared Stock was known for his presence, kindness and intelligent commentary, adding that his influence "will be remembered".
