Disney's Live-Action Moana Teaser Looks Strikingly Like a Cartoon
The first preview for the forthcoming live-action adaptation of Moana has been released. Is it surprising that, similar to many of Disney's live-action remakes, it looks very much like an animated film and much less like a true live-action movie?
Spectacular Visuals That Keep an Cartoonish Look
The trailer for the new iteration of Moana is certainly stunning. It includes sweeping scenery, gorgeous soundtrack, and well-known personalities. Yet, it still appears similar to an cartoon. The over-the-top visuals depict characters soaring, water acting unnaturally, and Maui transforming into both a bug and a bird. Each of these effects is achieved through computer-generated imagery and computer animation. Much like previous Disney remakes—such as The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, and The Jungle Book—the level of animation is so high that it raises the debate: what defines these films “live-action” besides the marketing label?
Story and Music Audiences Adore
Regardless, this latest Moana appears to be a retelling of the first tale, complete with new renditions of the cherished musical numbers. According to an official summary, “Moana answers the Ocean’s call and, for the first time, voyages beyond the reef of her island of Motunui with the legendary demigod Maui on an memorable journey to bring back prosperity to her people.”
Fresh Performers and Returning Stars
Meanwhile, the teaser includes a sample of the new take on “How Far I’ll Go,” performed by Catherine Laga'aia. The new actor is stepping into the part of Moana from Auliʻi Cravalho, who voiced the heroine in the first movies.
One person who hasn’t been replaced is Dwayne Johnson, who will again be playing Maui. Naturally, that role already looked like Johnson, so casting him in the real-life version seems logical.
Beloved Mascot Shows Up
Arguably the most important moment of the trailer arrives in the last scene. Moana's favorite chicken Hei Hei makes an appearance, squawking at the camera. How else to present the film’s true icon?
Arrival in Theaters
The real-life version of Moana debuts in theaters on July 10, 2026.
