An esteemed Russian general has been fatally wounded following an detonation in Moscow, according to an investigative body.
The event took place on Monday morning when an explosive device concealed beneath a vehicle detonated, causing the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.
Sarvarov served as the head of the armed forces' department for training operations.
Investigators stated that one theory under investigation points to the potential involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. To date, Ukraine has offered no public response.
Site of the Incident
Teams have been dispatched to the site, which is reportedly in a south district of the city.
Reports indicate the blast happened in a vehicle lot adjacent to a residential building.
Series of Assaults
Since the start of the extensive conflict in Ukraine, a number of Russian military officials have been attacked within Moscow.
This latest event follows other notable incidents, for instance:
- General Yaroslav Moskalik was lost his life in a vehicle explosion in Moscow earlier this year.
- General Igor Kirillov was killed in late 2024 when a bomb hidden on a scooter was set off from a distance.
While a source from Ukraine earlier linked Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such assertions are not formally acknowledged as a matter of standard practice.
The conflict has increasingly seen shadowy operations reaching into the center of the Russian capital.
The investigation into General Sarvarov's death remains active.
